If NC State had won the national championship in 1983 before UNC won the title in 1982, there might have been some unhappy rumblings among the Carolina faithful. After all, the notion that Norm Sloan and Jim Valvano could win national titles while Dean Smith couldn’t might have been more than Tar Heel fans could bear. Fortunately, that issue didn’t exist.
