It’s among the most powerful scientific instruments ever built. The James Webb Space Telescope, which launched on December 25, is destined for a point a million miles from Earth where it will unfurl gold-plated mirrors and begin searching the heavens for secrets long kept from humanity. It bears the name of UNC graduate James E. Webb ’28 (A.B.Ed.).
