Charlotte Smith, who won the 1994 national championship for UNC by making one of the most famous shots in women’s basketball history, grew up in Shelby and played college, and professional hoops in the state. Then she became an assistant coach at UNC and now is the head women’s basketball coach at Elon, where she enters her 12th season.
