When Karen Shelton accepted the head field hockey coach position at North Carolina in 1981, she was still a player. And not just any player — she was one of the best in the United States. Shelton’s first three years at UNC overlapped with her time spent with the U.S. National Team, which she played on from 1977 to 1984.
