Derrick DePriest was pitching for the University of North Carolina, and in one game topped out at only 79 mph as a starting pitcher. So...“I couldn’t succeed,” he said. “Basically, it was throw submarine.” DePriest got idea for the new delivery from former University of North Carolina coach Mike Roberts, the father of Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts. “He said it was ‘My way or the highway,’ and I have a lot of respect for him. I absolutely tried it; it took off.”
