Carolina Leadership Academy Honors Tar Heel Standouts
The Richard A. Baddour Carolina Leadership Academy identifies and recognizes top leaders each year with the Leader of Distinction Award. Eighteen Tar Heel student-athletes were selected for the honor for 2020-21, but with COVID limiting gatherings in the spring of 2021, Leadership Academy Executive Director Shelley Johnson had to get creative. Tar Heels Help Make The Holidays Brighter
The holiday season is rife with traditions, and one of the longest running for UNC student-athletes is the Share Your Holidays program. Each year, UNC student-athletes and staff "adopt" families through the Share Your Holidays program. Two UNC Alumni Receive First-Ever ACC UNITE Award
Two pioneers of North Carolina Tar Heels athletics were honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference Wednesday, receiving the conference’s inaugural UNITE Award. Edwin Okoroma ’65 of the men’s soccer team and Ophelia Speight ’74 of the women’s fencing team were honored for being the university’s first-ever male and female student athletes of color. (

UNC Men's Fencing, Women's Golf Honored With Academic Excellence Award
Each year, UNC Athletics honors two varsity teams – one men's team and one women's team – with the Carolina Academic Excellence Award, recognizing the most outstanding academic performance over the previous school year. In the 2020-21 academic year, the men's fencing team made it four-for-four and has won the award each year of its existence. (

Tar Heels Third In Directors' Cup Standings Following Fall & Winter Sports
North Carolina is in third place in the 2020-21 Directors' Cup standings, which the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) released Thursday. UNC's fall and winter sports amassed 696.50 points, most in the Atlantic Coast Conference and third most among all schools behind Stanford (770.00) and Michigan (769.50). (

UNC Honors Top Ten Scholar-Athletes
UNC has announced the winners of this year's Top 10 Scholar-Athlete awards, recognizing seniors who have maintained the highest cumulative grade point averages while representing UNC as a member of a varsity team. The recognitions go to the top five men and top five women. This year's honorees carry a combined average GPA of 3.91. (

UNC Student-Athlete Advisory Council creates voter registration initiative
Despite the uncertainty concerning many details of their upcoming sports seasons, UNC athletes are still finding a way to make their mark. This fall, an athlete-led voter initiative is working toward 100 percent voter registration among eligible athletes on UNC's 28 varsity sports teams. The project is organizing a voter registration drive. (

UNC athletes had a Saturday march on Franklin Street
Sean May, the director of basketball operations for men’s basketball, said he learned of the march when
Garrison Brooks texted the team’s group chat. May said he stayed off to the side, but wanted to show support with his presence. “I thought it was super powerful that that many young people get together at the spur of the moment for something that is bigger than them,” May said. (

Tar Heels Gain From ACC Summer Development Program
Eleven Tar Heels participated in the ACC's Professional Development Academy over the summer, gaining valuable experience during a time when many plans were derailed by COVID-19. The six-week virtual program gave each participant the opportunity to forge new connections, learn from a range of speakers, and develop personal and career goals. (
