Former UNC star Sam Perkins on Silent Sam statue: 'Of course I am going to speak out'

Part of the reason Sam Perkins was inspired to speak out against Silent Sam was the lessons he’d learned from legendary former UNC basketball coach Dean Smith, who helped promote desegregation by offering the first scholarship to a black athlete at the school, Charlie Scott. For Perkins, it still was uncomfortable to speak out against the school.
