Undrafted by the NFL, Parker worked out on campus in 2003, running patterns for young quarterback Matt Baker. Dan Rooney Jr., who lived in Gastonia and scouted for his family's football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, had seen Parker in drills, and was amazed by his reported time of 4.28 seconds in the 40 dash. He suggested the Steelers sign him as a free agent.
