In 1988, on the eve before Roy Williams moved from Chapel Hill to Lawrence, Kan., Dean Smith hosted his pupil’s family for a farewell dinner. It was there Smith reiterated his biggest worry of the longtime assistant coach: Williams took losses too hard. That refusal to accept defeat and find minor victories in loss has separated Williams from his peers.
