Mack Brown and his new coaching staff at Appalachian State set the third week of January 1983 as their first big recruiting weekend after Brown began work in Boone. They got about a dozen recruits and were ready for a full slate of wooing the 17-year-olds on the idea of playing football for the Mountaineers. They woke up Saturday to a foot of snow.
