North Carolina vs. Pitt Postgame Notes

UNC has won seven straight road games (6-0 last season). UNC has the nation’s second longest active streak with seven straight road wins. Two-time defending national champion Georgia has the longest current streak with 11. This is UNC’s first 4-0 start since 1997 and its second since 1983. This is Carolina’s ninth 4-0 start since 1950.
• Carolina improves to 4-0, while the Panthers drop to 1-3.
• The Tar Heels are 1-0 on the road this season.
• Carolina wins its ACC opener for the second straight season.
• Mack Brown is 278-144-1, including 103-68-1 in 15 seasons as head coach of the Tar Heels.
• The seven-game road winning streak is Carolina’s longest since the Tar Heels won nine consecutive games from 2014-16.
• North Carolina is now 54-22 as a ranked team in 15 seasons under Brown.
• North Carolina is now 12-5 all-time against Pittsburgh.
• This was Carolina’s first win in Pittsburgh since 2017.
• UNC is 8-2 against the Panthers since the Panthers joined the ACC in 2013.
• This was Carolina’s first win at Pitt as a ranked team.
• Carolina scored a season-high 41 points.
• This was the fourth time in as many games this season the Tar Heels scored 30 or more points. UNC has scored 30 or more in eight of its last 12 games (all except the four losses to end the 2022 season).
• It was the second time this season UNC scored at least 40 points and the 21st time since Mack Brown returned to Chapel Hill in 2019.
• North Carolina scored all four times in the red zone vs. Pittsburgh and has scored 17 times in 19 drives in the red zone this season. The Tar Heels have scored 13 TDs and have made four field goals when advancing into the red zone.
• Carolina’s 21 second-quarter points were a season high for a quarter and the most by UNC since a 21-point fourth quarter against the Panthers last year in Chapel Hill.
• The 28 points in the first half were the most by UNC this season and the most in any half since scoring 28 in the second half against Pitt last season.
• Carolina’s 91-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter (capped by Maye’s left-handed TD pass to Paysour) was the Tar Heels’ longest scoring drive of the season and the longest since a 91-yard TD drive at Wake Forest last season.
• Carolina scored touchdowns in 10 straight quarters against Pittsburgh (the last three quarters in 2021, all four quarters in 2022 and the first three quarters tonight).
• Carolina’s four possessions in the first half were a season low (five several times).
• Drake Maye completed 22 of 30 passes for 296 yards. He threw for one score and rushed for two.
• Maye’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Kobe Paysour was his first left-handed touchdown pass as a Tar Heel.
• Maye has thrown at least one touchdown pass in three of the four games this season and 15 of 18 career starts.
• Maye passed for 296 yards. He has thrown for at least 200 yards in all four games this season and all 18 games as a starter.
• Maye rushed for two touchdowns for the first time this season and first time since he had two last seasons against Virginia Tech. He has 10 career rushing touchdowns to go with 44 passing touchdowns.
• With 299 total offensive yards, Drake Maye passed Ronald Curry for sixth place all-time in total offense.
• Omarion Hampton has scored a rushing touchdown in four-straight games, the longest streak of his career.
• Hampton is the first UNC running back to score a rushing touchdown in each of his first four games since Javonte Williams in 2020.
• Hampton’s 19-yard catch-and-run late in the second quarter was the longest reception of his career (previous was 17 yards last week vs. Minnesota).
• J.J. Jones caught six passes for a career-high 117 yards. His previous high was 91 yards earlier this year vs. App State.
• Alijah Huzzie’s 52-yard punt return for a touchdown was Carolina’s first since Dazz Newsome’s 75-yarder at Syracuse in 2018.
• Alijah Huzzie’s 29-yard punt return in the second quarter was Carolina’s first punt return this season.
• Huzzie also made his first two interceptions as a Tar Heel (13th and 14th of his career).
• Huzzie is the first Tar Heel with two interceptions in a game since Cam’Ron Kelly in Wake Forest in 2021.
• Ben Kiernan’s 59-yard punt in the second quarter was his longest of the season and 38th 50-plus yard punt of his career.
• John Copenhaver’s 40-yard reception in the second quarter was his longest of the season.
• J.J. Jones set a new career high with six receptions for 117 yards. His previous highs were 5 catches for 91 yards.
• Conner Harrell came on for one snap at quarterback in the second quarter following a late-hit on Maye. Other than wildcat snaps, this was the first offensive snap by a Tar Heel quarterback this season by a quarterback other than Maye.
• Noah Burnette’s 48-yard field goal in the third quarter was a career long (previous was 47 at App State in 2022).
• Cedric Gray’s fumble recovery early in the fourth quarter was the first by either UNC or an opponent in any game this season.
• This was the third time in four games the Tar Heels have scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the game (South Carolina, Minnesota and Pittsburgh).
• Carolina has not fumbled in each of the four games this season.
• It was the first time an opponent has scored on its first two drives since App State scored on its first three possessions in Boone in 2022.
• Kenny Johnson’s 100–yard kickoff return in the third quarter was the first by an opponent since Old Dominion’s Isaiah Harper (100 yards) in 2017.
• Carolina has not fumbled in each of the four games this season.
