North Carolina Football vs. Virginia Postgame Notes

The Tar Heels six-game win streak ended. It was the third six-game win streak under Mack Brown and the sixth since 1980. UNC had 490 yards of offense. The Tar Heels had won their last 15 when gaining at least 400 yards. Cedric Gray's new career high is 18 tackles, surpassing his previous high of 16, which he achieved against UVA last season.
• Carolina falls to 6-1.
• Mack Brown is 280-145-1, including 105-69-1 in 15 seasons as head coach of the Tar Heels.
• Carolina still leads the South’s Oldest Rivalry series against UVA 66-58-4.
• The Tar Heels fell to 56-23 as a ranked team in 15 seasons under Brown.
• Carolina has scored 32 times in 37 drives in the red zone this season. The Tar Heels have scored 21 TDs and have made 11 field goals when advancing into the red zone.
• Since Mack Brown's return in 2019, Tar Heel quarterbacks have thrown 42 touchdowns to tight ends or running backs, which is the most in the ACC.
• 2023 is the fourth-straight season that a Carolina quarterback has had five or more rushing touchdowns.
• For the first time since 2021, the Tar Heels had a 100-yard receiver and a 100-yard rusher in back-to-back games. Tez Walker had 132 and 103 yards receiving, while Omarion Hampton had 197 and 108 yards rushing the past two weeks.
• Carolina has had a 200+ yard passer, 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver in back-to-back games. Both games were Drake Maye, Tez Walker and Omarion Hampton.
• The Tar Heels have tallied five scoring drives of 90+ yards in the last four games.
• Drake Maye was 24 of 48 for 347 yards and two touchdowns.
• Maye also added a rushing touchdown, his fifth of the season and 12th of his career.
• Maye has thrown for at least 300 yards 10 times and the Tar Heels have a 8-2 record when he does. Maye tied Bryn Renner with 10 career 300-yard passing games, although Sam Howell holds the record for the most 300-yard passing games in Tar Heel history with 14. Renner's record when throwing for over 300 yards was 6-4, while Howell's was 6-8.
• He has thrown for at least 200 yards in all seven games this season and in all 21 games as a starter. Maye passed Marquise Williams in career 200-yard passing games and is now tied with Darian Durant with 21.
• He has completed 20 or more passes 15 times and 30 or more passes four times since the start of the 2022 season. The Tar Heels have a 4-0 record when Maye throws for over 30 completions.
• Maye has thrown at least one touchdown pass in six of the seven games this season and 18 of 21 career starts. He has thrown multiple touchdowns in 16 of 21 career starts.
• This was Maye’s seventh career game with multiple 20+ yard TD passes.
• Maye threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to tight end Bryson Nesbit in the second quarter. Maye has thrown 18 touchdown passes to tight ends or running backs since the start of the 2022 season, the most in the ACC.
• Maye leads the ACC with 11 completions of 40 or more yards, the most in the conference.
• Entering Saturday, Maye was ranked fifth in the country in passing yards per game, with 317.0 yards. He now averages 321.3 passing yards and 7,256 yards of total offense. He continues to lead the ACC in yards per game and total passing yards, which currently sit at 2,249.
• Since the NCAA granted Tez Walker his eligibility, Drake Maye has thrown for 74 completions on 128 attempts, accumulating 1,062 yards and nine touchdowns with one interception.
• Maye completed his 500th pass on the game's second drive with a 25-yard touchdown throw to Tez Walker. Maye’s first completion was a 4-yard pass to Josh Downs against Wofford in 2021.
• Against ACC opponents Maye is 96 of 158 for 1,358 yards 10 touchdowns and 1 interception.
• Omarion Hampton rushed for 112 yards on 19 carries. This marked the fifth game of his career and the third of the season in which he rushed for over 100 yards.
• Hampton rushed for 197 last week against Miami. This was the first time in his career that he rushed for over 100 yards in back-to-back games.
• He is the first Tar Heel to rush for 100 yards in back-to-back games since Sam Howell in 2021 when he rushed for 101 and 104 yards against Notre Dame and Wake Forest.
• Hampton is the first UNC running back to tally three 100-yard games in a season since Ty Chandler in 2021. He is also the first Tar Heel running back to average over five yards per carry in three straight games since Chandler in 2021.
• Entering Saturday, Hampton was ranked in the top ten in the country in rushing yards per game, Hampton is now averaging 110 rushing yards per game.
• Tez Walker had 11 receptions for 146 yards and one touchdown.
• Tight end Bryson Nesbit’s 62-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter was the longest of his career.
• The second quarter was the 10th time the Carolina defense has allowed a scoreless quarter this year. The Tar Heels defense only produced 15 scoreless quarters last season.
• Since the start of the 2022 season, Cedric Gray has led the power five in tackles. Against UVA, he added 18 tackles, bringing his new total to 318 tackles. It was his 9th game of his career with 10 or more tackles.
• Armani Chatman recorded his second interception of the season.
• Carolina has recorded an interception in six of its seven games this season. The Tar Heels have recorded two interceptions in four of its seven games this season.
• Entering today, Kaimon Rucker was leading the ACC in sacks and sack yards, ranked nationally at seventh in sacks, and second in yardage. Against UVA, he added one sack and three sacks yards. Bring his total to seven sacks for 78 yards.
• Entering today’s game, Kaimon Rucker was ranked 14th nationally in tackles for losses and third for tackles for loss yards. He leads the ACC in both categories. Today, he added one tackle for loss and now has a season total of 11.
• Rucker is on pace to have over 13 sacks this season. The only Tar Heels to ever have 13 sacks in a season are Lawrence Taylor and Julius Peppers.
• Defensive back Gio Biggers had four tackles. He now has 151 tackles for his career.
• Noah Burnette made a 43-yard field goal to end the first half. He is the first Tar Heel kicker to make his first 10 field goals in a season since Connor Barth in 2006.
• Burnette was 2 of 2 on field goals. It was his fourth straight game with multiple field goals and the ninth such game of his career.
