The surprise is that Bill Belichick has opted into a football program that has long been mediocre. The Tar Heels have won double-digit games just once over the past 27 years. Only one head coach has left UNC without being fired since 1977; that coach, Mack Brown, was pushed out last month in his second, much less successful stint in Chapel Hill.
