In the 1969 East Regional Final, Charlie Scott, UNC's first African-American player, hit a jumper with 1:49 left to tie the game, and then sank another shot at the buzzer to give UNC an 87-85 victory and its third straight trip to the Final Four. Scott finished with 32. Without star Dick Grubar, who suffered a season-ending injury earlier in the tournament, the Tar Heels fell to Purdue in the national semifinals.
