Jacobs: K’s Record Evokes Memories Of Dean

That 1997 season, North Carolina’s Dean Smith achieved his 877th win, passing Kentucky’s Adolph Rupp to break a longstanding career record for coaching victories. Both Smith and Rupp had played at Kansas for Forrest “Phog” Allen, who died in 1974. Smith paid unemotional tribute to Allen after tying his former coach in career wins at 746 during the 1993 season, which ended with the UNC coach’s second NCAA championship.
