Frank McGuire soon came south from his native New York City to take over the reins of UNC’s program. The big city’s high schoolers proved equal to Indiana’s and soon produced a first in our state, when the Tar Heels won the 1957 NCAA championship. One of the first places McGuire spoke following the big triumph was in Morganton, and it was a thrill for me to hear and meet him.
