Dean Smith, Al McGuire and Charlotte’s Providence Road

Allie McGuire met a lot of great coaches during his summers in North Carolina when his dad would run a camp and bring in guests to speak or work. Among the coaches young Allie met were Lefty Driesell, then at Davidson, , who coached his father at St. John’s and led North Carolina to the 1957 NCAA championship, and of course, Smith, who took over the North Carolina program when left in 1961.
