UNC Basketball Recruiting Week in Review
Posted Oct 5, 2015
A look back at the past week in UNC basketball recruiting.
--The big news of the week occurred on Monday 9/28 when 2016 4-star shooting guard Brandon Robinson committed to the Tar Heels, joining 4-star big man Tony Bradley as the first two members of UNC's 2016 basketball recruiting class. UNC assistant Hubert Davis paid a visit to Robinson the day after his commitment.
--On the day of Robinson's commitment, Roy Williams and assistant Steve Robinson were on an overseas recruiting trip to Helsinki, Finland for an in-home visit with 2016 4-star power forward Lauri Markkanen.
--2017 5-star shooting guard and UNC commit Jalek Felton left for Colorado Springs, CO on Saturday for a two-day minicamp with the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team to prepare for international competitions in 2016.
--2016 5-star power forward Jarrett Allen, who holds an offer from UNC, was also in Colorado Springs for the minicamp and was among the standouts.
--2016 5-star power forward Harry Giles attended the USA Basketball minicamp as well but had little to say about UNC during a one-on-one interview. If you're reading the tea leaves on this recruitment, it appears that UNC is a long shot to land Giles at this point.
--And one final USA minicamp note, 2016 5-star shooting guard Kobi Simmons is out of the USA Basketball program on not-so-good terms. No matter, though, Simmons has cut his list to Ohio State, Kentucky, and UNLV, eliminating UNC in the process.
--UNC also looks to be on the outside looking in for 2016 5-star power forward Dewan Huell, who holds a UNC scholarship offer.
--2016 5-star forward T.J. Leaf (El Cajon, CA) is down to six schools: Kansas, Louisville, North Carolina, Oregon, San Diego State, and UCLA. We haven't covered his recruitment very much because most indications are that he will be staying out West, perhaps to attend UCLA, after decommitting from Arizona.
--It was also a big weekend for UNC recruits visiting elsewhere as 2016 5-star shooting guard Rawle Alkins and 2016 4-star center Udoka Azubuike visited NC State. 2016 5-star power foward Edrice Adebayo was also scheduled to attend but the inclement weather reportedly kept him at home.
--Moving forward, it appears that 5-star combo guard Seventh Woods and Lauri Markkanen are UNC's best hopes to complete the 2016 class. As it stands now, UNC's class is ranked 11th in the nation in Scout.com's 2016 updated recruting class rankings.
Isaiah Denis (Davidson, NC) announced his college commitment to the North Carolina Tar Heels on 247Sports Saturday afternoon. The 4-star combo guard is ranked as...
