Wednesday's [football signing day] results also showed that the state's schools have a shot at defending their turf better in the years ahead, especially at North Carolina. New Tar Heels coach Butch Davis and his recruiting coordinator, John Blake, worked wonders in the final weeks and ended up signing a class that ranked in Scout.com's top 20 -- not bad for a program coming off a 3-9 season.
