North Carolina vs. Georgia Tech Postgame Notes

It was UNC’s first loss in 46 games under Mack Brown when the Tar Heels scored over 40 points. Bryson Nesbit's first-quarter TD tied Tony Blanchard (1968-70) and Ken Taylor (1970-72) for the second most career TD receptions by a tight end with nine. Nesbit is one touchdown away from tying teammate Kamari Morales with 10 receiving TDs.
• UNC falls to 6-2 with its second consecutive loss in ACC play.
• Brown is 280-146-1, including 105-70-1 in 15 seasons as head coach of the Tar Heels.
• Brown is 7-6-1 against Georgia Tech.
• The Tar Heels are 56-24 as a ranked team in 15 seasons under Brown.
• It was the fifth time this season UNC scored at least 40 points.
• Carolina scored a touchdown on its first possession of the game for the fourth time in eight games this season and the first time since week 4 at Pittsburgh. It was the fifth time UNC scored on its first possession (touchdowns vs. South Carolina, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech and a field goal vs. Syracuse).
• Omarion Hampton rushed for 153 yards on 29 carries and scored two touchdowns, bringing his total rushing touchdowns for the year to 10. He is the first Tar Heel to have 10 rushing touchdowns in a season since Ty Chandler in 2021.
• Hampton rushed for two touchdowns in the first half. It was the sixth time this season Hampton has rushed for at least one touchdown.
• He is the first Tar Heel to rush for over 100 yards in three straight games since Javonte Williams in 2020.
• Hampton is the first Tar Heel to rush for 100 yards against Georgia Tech since Javonte Williams in 2019.
• This marked the sixth game of his career and the fourth of the season in which Hampton rushed for over 100 yards.
• Hampton’s 29-yard reception on a successful 3rd and 18 conversion, which set up a touchdown run by Drake Maye, was the longest reception of his career.
• Maye led the Tar Heels to an opening-drive score for the 14th time in 22 career starts.
• Since the start of 2022, in the red zone, Drake Maye has thrown 32 touchdowns and only one interception.
• Carolina’s 28 first half points matched the most scored in a half this season. The Tar Heels also scored 28 in the first half against Pitt.
• Carolina’s defense allowed 24 points in the second quarter. It was the most points scored by an opponent in a single quarter since last season versus Notre Dame.
• Don Chapman’s third quarter interception was his second of the season and the fifth of his career.
• Maye’s third quarter rushing touchdown was his sixth of the season and 13th of his career.
• Maye now has 1,019 career rushing yards. He is only the fourth Tar Heel quarterback since 1980 to have over 1,000 rushing yards. The other three are Ronald Curry, Marquise Williams and Sam Howell.
• Tonight was the fourth time this season and ninth time in his career Maye has rushed for and thrown a touchdown pass in a game (this season vs. Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia and Georgia Tech). UNC 6-2 entering this game when he runs for and throws a TD pass.
• Maye was 17 of 25 for 310 yards and two touchdowns. He added 58 rushing yards. Maye had 368 yards of total offense.
• Maye has thrown for at least 300 yards 11 times, and the Tar Heels are 9-2 record when he does. He passed Bryn Renner who had 10 career 300-yard passing games, although Sam Howell holds the record for the most 300-yard passing games in Tar Heel history with 14. Renner's record when throwing for over 300 yards was 6-4, while Howell's was 6-8.
• Maye has thrown at least one touchdown pass in seven of the eight games this season and 19 of 22 career starts. He has thrown multiple touchdowns in 17 of 22 career starts.
• Carolina has scored 37 times in 42 drives in the red zone this season. The Tar Heels have scored 26 TDs and have made 11 field goals when advancing into the red zone.
• Against Georgia Tech, Carolina scored five touchdowns in five drives in the red zone.
• UNC has scored 30 or more points in 12 of its last 16 games.
• Tychaun Chapman's 52-yard kickoff return was the longest of the year. On the very next play, Maye connected with Chapman for his first career touchdown on a 35-yard reception.
• Georgia Tech responded with a 70-yard rushing touchdown by Dontea Smith, the longest run Carolina had given up all season. The previous long was 29-yards.
• Noah Burnette missed his first field goal of the season in the fourth quarter. Prior to the kick he was 11 for 11.
