In 1922, North Carolina won the Southern Conference men's basketball championship without a head coach. The next season, the team still had no coach and went 15-1. In 1924, Norman Shepard coached the team, and the Tar Heels enjoyed their first undefeated season at 26-0 and was voted the national champions. This happened before the advent of the NCAA Tournament. Ever since, Carolina has not only had a head coach for its basketball team, it's had some of the best to ever coach the game.
