1st-year ASU coach Jason Capel puts pedigree to work

As Appalachian State prepared for its season opener, first-year men's basketball coach Jason Capel saw something he didn't like. The 30-year-old Capel stopped the workout and reached into his past for something to put the Mountaineers on the right track. No, the former North Carolina Tar Heel (1998-2002) and son of a longtime college coach (Jeff Capel II) didn't employ a kernel of coaching wisdom he'd gained from the roots with which he's most often associated.
