Carolina lost in the ACC quarterfinals for the first time since 2004 when Georgia Tech beat UNC 83-82 in Greensboro in Roy Williams' first game as a head coach in the event. UNC had won eight in a row in the quarterfinal round since that defeat. Sophomore guard Marcus Paige led all scorers with 27 points, 20 of which came in the second half.
