Bobby Cunningham from '57 UNC title team dies
Posted Jun 14, 2006
Nearly 50 years ago, in the days of black-and-white TV, college basketball was about to strike at passions of Carolinians. It was late March 1957, and North Carolina had to play three overtimes to beat Michigan State for the right to play Kansas for the national title -- and a perfect season of 32 wins. The next night it took three more overtimes, but North Carolina -- led by a coach and five starters from New York -- beat Kansas and its much-feared center Wilt Chamberlain 54-53. Tuesday, Bob Cunningham, one of the five starters on that fabled team, died in a Savannah, Ga., hospital after battling cancer and a heart attack. He was 70.
