Tar Heel Softball Edges Out UCF, 2-1
UNC Softball (5-1) gritted out a 2-1 victory over UCF (4-2) in their first win of the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational on Friday (

The North Carolina softball team capped off a 4-0 opening weekend with back-to-back victories against NC A&T and Winthrop on Saturday. In game one against the Aggies, a 13-3 victory, Carolina's bats came out scorching, plating a weekend-best 13 runs on 15 hits. Lexi Godwin set a new career-best with five RBIs and hit her first home run since 2020. (

Sonya Bright, Mickey Hickerson Named Tar Heel Trailblazers
UNC Athletics will honor two pioneering former student-athletes with the 2024 Tar Heel Trailblazers award. This year's honorees are Sonya Bright and Mickey Hickerson. In 1990, Bright became the first African American softball player at UNC. Mickey Hickerson was the first African American baseball player at UNC, joining the varsity in spring of 1970. (

Carmichael Arena Lobby Dedicated In Dr. Beth Miller's Honor
Dr. Beth Miller spent more than 40 years working as part of the UNC Department of Athletics, and during that time she was part of thousands of gatherings in Carmichael Arena, whether cheering at games, coaching at practices, or mentoring student-athletes. Sunday, she was a central figure in another gathering at Carmichael, this one convened in her honor. (

Mateen James Named UNC Softball Assistant Coach
After serving as director of sports performance for the past two seasons, UNC softball head coach
Megan Smith Lyon announced that Aquilla "Kiwi" Mateen James has been elevated to assistant coach. After graduating in 2016 from UNC with a degree in exercise and sports science, Mateen served as the volunteer assistant for the Tar Heels from 2016-18. (
